After driving through the fog on Saturday morning the QCD crew got to Maidstone in plenty of time to get the layout set up and running. After the obligatory teas and coffees and mince pies had been taken on board, we prepared ourselves for the onrush of spectators.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best attended of shows and in particular both afternoons tailed off really quickly. Nonetheless the mornings produced a steady stream of visitors who, as is our wont, we engaged in conversation if they were unlucky enough to catch our eye.
On one side of us we had a forty year old N gauge layout and on the other side an impressive Gauge 1 track with live steam. So, depending on your point of view, ranging from the sublime to the, well, you know. There were also a number of layouts in N, OO and G gauges as well as a large number of traders. Thankfully the traders had very little O gauge to sell so our wallets were safe.
Anyway, we did our thing operating the QCD high level with the hypnotic (according to Roger) sequence of movements adopted at last year’s Maidstone show. The challenge now is to work out a sequence of movements on the lower level for shows. We are discovering that without a plan you need to be thinking two or three moves ahead if you don’t want to snooker yourself. So, an enjoyable couple of days playing trains in Maidstone. Chris
